The layers of the head extend from the skin and subcutaneous tissue through the facial muscles and fascia to the skull, the meninges and the brain. Cranial nerves, branches of the carotid arteries and tributaries of the jugular veins run between these layers to reach the sense organs, glands and upper airways.
