Respiratory system
Isolated

The respiratory system within the thorax, with the lungs, airways, heart and pulmonary vessels.
The lungs lie in the pleural cavities, lined by the visceral and parietal pleura, on either side of the mediastinum. The pulmonary arteries carry deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle to the lungs, and the pulmonary veins return oxygenated blood to the left atrium; the diaphragm and intercostal muscles drive ventilation.
