A section of the kidney showing the cortex, medulla, renal pyramids, calyces and renal pelvis.
The renal cortex contains the renal corpuscles and convoluted tubules of the nephrons, while the medulla contains the loops of Henle and collecting ducts, arranged in renal pyramids. Urine drains from the papillae of the pyramids into the minor calyces, then the major calyces and the renal pelvis, which continues as the ureter.
